Life Insurers’ New business premium rose 21% to Rs 48,780 crore in September
Oct 09,2026

The New Business Premium (NBP) of life insurance companies in India rose by 21% this September to Rs 48,780.55 crore, compared to Rs 40,206.67 crore during the same period last year.

Market leader Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), a state-owned entity, recorded a growth of nearly 20% in its New Business Premium, taking it to Rs 27,528.71 crore; the figure stood at Rs 22,957.09 crore during the same period last year.

According to the latest data released by the Life Insurance Council, 24 private insurance companies recorded a growth of over 23.2% in their New Business Premium, increasing it from Rs 17,249.58 crore in the previous year to Rs 21,251.84 crore.

For the six-month period ending in September, the total New Business Premium of all life insurance companies stood at Rs 2,45,603.73 crore; this is 20.59% higher than the Rs 2,03,668.19 crore recorded during the same period of the previous financial year. In the first half of the current fiscal year, LIC's new business premium rose by 19.29% to Rs 1,44,346.64 crore, up from Rs 1,21,008.19 crore during the same period last year.

As for private insurers, driven by the strong performance of select companies, the overall new business premium increased by 22.50%, rising from Rs 82,660 crore to Rs 1,01,257.09 crore.

Among major private insurance companies, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance recorded very strong growth, with its first-year premium rising by 25% to ₹2,701 crore. HDFC Life saw its first-year premium increase by 18.3% to ₹4,000 crore, while SBI Life Insurance recorded a 10.4% rise to ₹4,035 crore. GoDigit registered a growth of 28.9%, bringing its first-year premium to ₹127 crore.

It is noteworthy that premium collections increased even though the number of policies or plans sold declined slightly to 21.93 lakh from 22.06 lakh in the corresponding period of the previous year. Similarly, in August, despite a lower volume of policies and plans sold, the Net Premium Income (NBP) surged by 33% year-on-year to Rs 41,197.78 crore.

September was dominated by discussions regarding key regulatory changes proposed by the IRDAI concerning insurance distribution, commissions, and expenses.
