Life Insurance Companies Record 33.07% Surge in New Business Premium in August
Sep 08,2026

Driven by strong premium collection from both the state-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and private insurers, life insurance companies recorded robust monthly growth in New Business Premium (NBP) for the financial year in August. The figure rose by 33.07% year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 41,198 crore, surpassing the 20% growth observed in July.

During the April-August period, the total New Business Premium increased by 20.4% to Rs 1.97 lakh crore, compared to Rs 1.6 lakh crore in the same period last year. Meanwhile, retail-weighted premium grew by approximately 13.9%.

The surge in August was primarily driven by the group single-premium business, which rose by 56.1% year-on-year to Rs 23,887 crore. Reflecting growth in the regular retail segment, individual non-single premium rose by 13.4% to Rs 10,349 crore, while individual single premium increased by 34.7% to Rs 5,512 crore.

According to data released by the Life Insurance Council, the New Business Premium (NBP) of the largest insurer, LIC, rose by 45.26% during the month to Rs 23,275.43 crore. The primary driver of this rise was the group single premium business, which surged by over 70% to reach Rs 17,141 crore. LIC's retail business premium grew by 12.8% in August. During the April-August period, its total new business premium rose by 19.14%, while retail business premium saw a growth of 15.3%.

Private insurance companies continued to perform well during this period. Their New Business Premium (NBP) rose by 22.3% to Rs 80,005.3 crore between April and August. Specifically in August, the growth for private insurers was nearly 20%, with premiums reaching Rs 17,922.25 crore.

Among major private insurers, Bajaj Life Insurance recorded robust growth of nearly 31.6%, with its NBP rising to Rs 1,953.99 crore. This was followed by HDFC Life Insurance, which grew by 17.8% to reach Rs 3,609.5 crore. However, its revenue growth during the April-August period was relatively modest; total premium increased by 14%, while retail-weighted premium grew by only about 6%. SBI Life also recorded growth in August; its total new business premium rose by 2.83% year-on-year, while retail-weighted premium increased by 21.8%. During the April-August period, SBI Life recorded a 12.73% growth in total new business premium and a 16% growth in retail-driven premium.

ICICI Prudential Life Insurance reached Rs 1,952.8 crore with a 10% growth, while Axis Max Life Insurance's premium rose by 8.11% to Rs 1,236.5 crore. SBI Life Insurance recorded a modest growth of 2.83% in its new business premium (NBP), reaching Rs 3,415.4 crore.
