The key domestic indices posted modest gains. Nifty Metal, Nifty Media and Nifty Realty shares rose, while Nifty IT and Nifty Consumer Durables shares fell.

As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, inched down 19.63 points to 74,294.96. The Nifty 50 index up 75.80 points to 23,346.40.

The broader market performed better than frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index increased by 1.30% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index climbed 1.31%.

The market breadth was encouraging. On the BSE, 3235 shares gained and 1870 shares declined. A total of 221 shares were unchanged.

HDFC Bank Ltd was the top traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 394.01 lakh shares and posted a sharp rise of 27.21% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has retreated by around 2.19% in last one-month and has fallen sharply 26.23% over last one year.

Tata Steel Ltd was the second highest traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 290.14 lakh shares and saw an increase of 2.29% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock is up around 0.69% in last one-month and has climbed sharply 9.30% over last one year.

The Nifty Metal index gained 1.51% to 13052.6 today. The index has slumped by 3.36% in last one week and has inched lower by 1.88% over last one month. It is sharply higher by 29.58% in last one year. Welspun Corp Ltd (up 8.12%), APL Apollo Tubes Ltd (up 5.66%), Hindustan Zinc Ltd (up 4.14%), Vedanta Ltd (up 3.94%) and Jindal Stainless Ltd (up 3.66%) moved higher.

The Nifty Media index moved higher by 1.34% to 1553.75 today. The index has eased by 0.11% in last one week and has slipped by 3.92% over last one month. It is down 6.09% in last one year. PVR Inox Ltd (up 4.09%), Prime Focus Ltd (up 2.81%), Saregama India Ltd (up 2.18%), Network 18 Media & Investments Ltd (up 2.04%) and Nazara Technologies Ltd (up 1.88%) jumped.

The Nifty IT index eased by 1.03% to 28854.55 today. The index has edged up by 0.92% in last one week and has shed 5.36% over last one month. It is sharply lower by around 20.01% in last one year. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (down 3.88%), Tech Mahindra Ltd (down 1.53%), Persistent Systems Ltd (down 1.04%), Mphasis Ltd (down 0.84%) and HCL Technologies Ltd (down 0.72%) traded lower.

The Nifty Consumer Durables index moved lower by 0.43% to 37848.25 today. The index is lower by 2.58% in last one week and has declined 5.98% over last one month. It has edged lower by 3.90% in last one year. Dixon Technologies (India) Ltd (down 2.14%), Voltas Ltd (down 2.12%), Blue Star Ltd (down 1.37%), Whirlpool of India Ltd (down 1.33%) and Kajaria Ceramics Ltd (down 1.19%) declined.
