Japan Stocks drift lower
09-Sep-26   17:07 Hrs IST
The Nikkei 225 declined 0.19% to settle at 65,143 on Wednesday, surrendering earlier advances amid a further appreciation of the Japanese yen to its highest level in nearly seven months.

The appreciation of the yen dampened investor confidence, potentially diminishing the earnings trajectory of Japanese firms reliant on exports. Remarks from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, cautioning against anticipating additional yen depreciation, further fueled anticipations of prospective currency intervention by Japanese regulators.

Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a concurrent rise in crude oil prices are fueling anxieties regarding inflation and bolstering anticipations of additional interest rate adjustments. Increased rates and a firmer yen present potential headwinds for Japanese equities.

Nintendo's shares experienced a 4% decline, Advantest's stock decreased by 2.8%, Fast Retailing's valuation fell 2.7%, and Mitsubishi UFJ retreated 1.5% among the prominent downward movers.
