Gold stuck in ranges
19-Oct-26   16:44 Hrs IST
Gold has experienced conflicting pressures from escalating monetary constraints and persistent safe-haven demand, resulting in prices remaining within a narrow $168 trading band, oscillating between $4,091 and $4,259 an ounce to date this month. Persistent inflation, a stronger US dollar, and increasing anticipation of stricter monetary policy, coupled with elevated global bond yields, are restricting gains. Nevertheless, ongoing central-bank accumulation and sustained geopolitical uncertainty are providing downside support. China continues to be a crucial source of demand, with its central bank expanding reserves by 23 tonnes in September—the largest monthly acquisition since October 2023—extending its purchasing run to 23 successive months. Chinese gold ETFs also registered inflows for the third consecutive month, adding 11 tonnes and increasing holdings to a record 304 tonnes. However, fluctuating oil prices and ambiguity surrounding the inflation and interest-rate trajectory are contributing to market volatility. With neither bullish nor bearish forces holding dominance, gold is in a consolidation phase, awaiting a definitive shift in US real yields, the dollar, or geopolitical sentiment to catalyze its next directional move.
