Gift Nifty posted modest gains, Asian markets traded slightly lower

Local stock markets may see a muted start today. The Gift Nifty April 2026 futures are up 0.23 points, indicating a slightly firm opening for the benchmark index today. The domestic equity market closed on a positive note in last session, with BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 marginally higher.The BSE Sensex has risen slightly 0.38% over the last one month, while the NSE Nifty has edged up 0.80% over the same period. In Asia today, sentiment was soft. China’s SSE Composite Index edged up 0.39% while Japan’s Nikkei 225 posted modest losses of 1.56%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index edged lower 1.68%. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 943 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers to the tune of Rs 2,883 crore in the Indian equity market on 5 August 2026, provisional data showed. Overnight on Wall Street, stocks drifted lower across the board. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended higher by 263.24 points, or 0.49%, and closed at 54370.12. The S&P 500 slipped 0.19% to end at 7743.12, and the NASDAQ Composite eased 0.89% to 26369.51. Yesterday, the S&P BSE Sensex added 152.05 points or 0.19% to 78581.00. The Nifty 50 index moved higher by 9.75 points or 0.04% to 24624.65. Shriram Finance Ltd was top gainer in Nifty 50 yesterday, posting modest gains of 3.23% to Rs 1122.40. The stock has posted modest gains of around 1.43% in last one-week and trades lower 10.47% over last one-month. In sectoral indices, only Nifty Metal index ticked up yesterday, advancing 1.72% on the day.
